چکیده

Movement time in Fitts’ law is usually considered through the ambiguous notion of the average of minimum movement times. In this paper, we argue that using two distinct metrics, one relating to minimum time and the other relating to average time can be advantageous. Both metrics have a lot of support from theoretical and empirical perspectives. We also give two examples, one in a controlled experiment and the other in a field study of pointing, where making the minimum versus average distinction is fruitful.

On the Validity of Using First-Person Shooters for Fitts’ Law Studies

3D first-person shooter games provide highly polished, compelling and entertaining environments that far out-strip the refinement of most research systems. Many also provide extensive support for tailoring the environment, allowing researchers to adapt them to specific research agendas. This paper examines using 3D first-person shooter game environments for motivating participants in Fitts’ Law...

Exploring Fitts’ Law in Web Browsing

As one of the most influential laws in human-computer interaction for decades, Fitts’ law quantitatively models human pointing behaviors. However, the majority of Fitts’ law experiments have been conducted in a laboratory environment, which lends doubt to its validity in a real-world GUI (Graphical User Interface) context. This paper attempts to stresstest Fitts’ law in the “wild”, namely, unde...

On the Validity of Throughput as a Characteristic of Computer Input

Throughput (TP) has been a fundamental metric in quantifying input system performance. TP is a concept based on Fitts’ law, an essentially two parameter (a, b) relationship between movement time (MT) and Fitts’ index of difficulty (ID). In part thanks to ISO 9241-9, the final draft international standard (FDIS) of “Ergonomic requirements for office work with visual display terminals Part 9: Req...

Speed-accuracy tradeoff in Fitts' law tasks-on the equivalency of actual and nominal pointing precision

accuracy trade-off in Fitts' law tasks — On the equivalency of actual and nominal pointing precision. ABSTRACT Pointing tasks in human computer interaction obey certain speed-accuracy tradeoff rules. In general, the more accurate the task to be accomplished, the longer it takes, and vice versa. Fitts' law models the speed-accuracy tradeoff effect in pointing as imposed by the task parameters, t...

On the Measurement of Movement Difficulty in the Standard Approach to Fitts' Law

Fitts' law is an empirical rule of thumb which predicts the time it takes people, under time pressure, to reach with some pointer a target of width W located at a distance D. It has been traditionally assumed that the predictor of movement time must be some mathematical transform of the quotient of D/W, called the index of difficulty (ID) of the movement task. We ask about the scale of measurem...
